QR types and use cases

The free generator supports the first eight types today. Hosted-content types (PDFs, audio, video, menus, business cards) land in an upcoming release once storage and landing-page delivery are complete.

  • Website URL
    Link to any web page — the most common use.
  • Plain text
    Any short message; readable when scanned.
  • Telephone call
    Opens the phone dialer with a number pre-filled.
  • Email
    Opens the mail app with recipient, subject and body pre-filled.
  • SMS
    Opens the messaging app with a phone number and pre-written message.
  • WhatsApp
    Opens a WhatsApp chat with an optional pre-filled message.
  • Wi-Fi
    Joins a Wi-Fi network automatically on most phones.
  • Location or map
    Opens a map at coordinates or a shared location URL.
  • Standard vCard
    Adds a contact card to the phone's address book.
  • Enhanced digital business card
    Coming soon — a mobile-friendly business card page.
  • PDF or document
